Beaver Scouts - For Fun!
The Beaver Scout Section is the youngest Section of the Scouting family - the age range is from 5 to 7 years. Their activities are based around making things, outdoor activities, singing, playing games, outdoor visits, investigating nature, listening to stories, learning how to be safe and most importantly, making new friends.
The adventure starts here and the emphasis is on maximum fun! Don't let our "cute" factor fool you as we can be as adventurous and daring as any other Section in Scouting. There are many reasons for joining a Beaver Scout Colony. While having fun, we get to play and learn how to get along with other children. We take on tasks and learn about responsibility, we learn new skills by "doing" them and most important of all we do all this with friends.
Beaver Scouts have a say in what is happening in the programme of activities - this is done through review games and at gatherings called Log Chews.
Beaver Scouts have a Promise that they renew at each meeting and their motto is "Make Friends".
"The best thing we did was dance and run in the rain. I wasn't even sure we were allowed to, but it was a fun thing to do and it was brilliant! I mean, we were out anyway so I guess it didn't matter too much after all."
Beavers usually meet on Wednesdays 6.00pm – 7.00pm.
What have the youngest section been up to?
Even though the Beaver section is still fresh and new I believe that it is on the right track to become a well established section in our group. The children are giving feedback by quickly learning the things we teach them such as the motto and promise. Besides this they are also enjoying themselves during the games and songs we prepare for them. I am finding it really fulfilling; when you are able to see children of that age so happy and smiling you know that your work is reaching it’s goal. That is exactly what we are trying to do, as leaders we want to see the children growing up into good scouts and still be happy and most importantly “Make Friends”. Even though they are still at a young age they are able to communicate well with us and this makes our job even more interesting.
First Beaver Meeting - 13th June 2007
Our first Beaver meeting was held on Wednesday 13 th June 2007 .23 new members attended the meeting which was a very nice and encouraging amount.
We started the meeting by forming a circle followed by the hoisting of the flag a small prayer and the” Hello” Ceremony. After that we had introductions, the Beavers introduced themselves to the other Beavers in the Colony and to the leaders. While we were still sitting in a circle we had a brief information section regarding scouting, followed by a enjoyable and simple PP presentation Presented by Kristina “ Hammy” “What are Beavers and Beaver Scouts “
After the Presentation we played a game “Snow Ball attack “ The Beavers were divided into 2 groups one group on each side and imaginary river between the them , They had to throw coloured paper balls at each other but the ones that fall in the ‘river’ were lost . The Beavers enjoyed the game and it was a good “Ice Breaker” and they got to know each other. Following that we had very brief information regarding the Hello and Good bye ceremony followed by another paper ball game. Even though the balls ending hitting more the leaders than in the buckets where they were suppose to go it was great fun and the beavers enjoyed it immensely .
The meeting came to an end with the good bye ceremony and flag down.
Before the Beavers left they were given a hand out of doll dressing craft of the beaver’s uniform to colour and cut out at home.
